The San Francisco office held a joint Pride & Juneteenth celebration! They enjoyed Jamaican food, custom cakes and had a blast singing karaoke. Thank you to Ruqia Mohammad for organizing this event.

On January 1,1863 the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves who lived in the southern confederate states. Even though this was passed, many people were still enslaved in the southern states throughout the Civil War. After two long years and the end of the Civil War, on June 19 1865, slavery was finally abolished from the origin of its roots in the south.

Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement! It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This holiday has been celebrated under many names like “Freedom Day”, “Jubilee Day”, “Cel-Liberation Day”, “Second Independence Day”, and “Emancipation Day”.

Interesting Facts:

  • A 10-acre piece of land was purchased in Houston, TX by former slaves in Richard Allen, Richard Brock, Jack Yates, and Elias Dibble in 1872 for $800 and named “Emancipation Park”.
  • June 17th, 2021 President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Holiday Independence Day Act, which officially made Juneteenth a federal holiday.
